Handheld Games Console

A handheld games console is an electronic, portable, lightweight device that consists of a built in speaker, screen as well as game controllers. It is usually smaller than the conventional game consoles and contains the speakers, controls and the screen in a single unit providing for mobility and portability.

The first handheld console was introduced in 1976 when Auto Race was first released. Consequently, several other companies designed their own portable, handheld games console. The oldest handheld games console which contained interchangeable cartridges were developed in 1979.

Upon the development of Game Boy, the developing company was accredited for popularizing the handheld games console concept in 1989 and has continued to dominate the handheld console market since then. The handheld consoles are only capable of playing a single game at a time and can fit on a tabletop or the palm of the hand. They support different video displays including LED, VCD or even VFD.
